Finding the right portable home safe can be challenging, as there are many different models to choose from. So, I'd like to walk you through a few key considerations that can help you narrow down your search. First, you need to ensure it's fireproof and waterproof? Some are not both. Do not compromise on this, or you might one day regret it. Second, it needs to be large enough to store your vital documents, irreplaceable photographs, spare cash, spare keys, precious metals, and cryptocurrency devices safely. Third, it needs to have a tubular pin tumbler lock—they're much harder to pick than both combination and standard key models. The one brand that meets all the above standards at a fair price is SentrySafe. They've been making safes of all kinds and sizes for years, and it's the brand I chose for my family. They can be found at stores like Walmart and Canadian Tire for around for $90-120, depending on the size you need. They do offer digital combination models, but I would steer clear of them, as they are more expensive, and, to my mind, less secure. You might be wondering why I don't recommend those large, steel-walled, bolted- to-the-floor models? Because if your home becomes compromised in a disaster, what will you do then? Empty its contents into your backpack? A pillowcase? Whatever you transfer your valuables into will no longer be secure. That's why I recommend portable safes. You can throw them out the window of a burning house, if need be, and the contents remain secure. That's my rationale, anyhow. Your thoughts? —Jeffrey
