It's been well-established that a major crisis will make it nearly impossible to reach emergency services by phone. In addition, you will likely have to wait hours for their response given the overwhelming number of distress calls received. What this means is that you will be solely responsible for the safety and well-being of your family or group, no matter how urgent the situation becomes. Therefore, in order to prevent the loss of a critically-injured loved one or neighbour, I urge that everyone over 16 be certified in basic first aid and CPR. Note that I use the word "certified" here. Juveniles younger than 16 may also be trained in lifesaving principles, so long as they are mature enough to shoulder the responsibility that comes with it.
Finally, while other areas of survival may require us to become more self-sufficient, none has such grave consequences if we ignore the need. Moreover, since these courses are typically in high demand, class reservations may need to be made weeks or months in advance to secure a spot. Therefore, this should be among the first actions you take when beginning your disaster preparation journey. It might make all the difference one day!
