More often than not, disaster strikes with utter indifference. It doesn't care that you haven't stocked up on food and water; it doesn't shed a tear for leaving you homeless, or without access to your phone, bank accounts, insurance policies, and the like. Therefore, it is absolutely important that you create a digital archive of your vital docs in preparation for the day we both hope will never come. When I say digital archive what I'm referring to is a collection of scanned digital images of every vital document in your household. These can range from birth certificates to insurance policies to bank statements to cherished photographs. These are then transferred onto a USB or thumb drive for safekeeping. That way, if you only manage to get out the door with that USB drive and the clothes on your back, you will be able to quickly rebuild your life by being able to provide various agencies and authorities the documents they need. I can tell you from experience it is a tedious process, but one you will be glad you did in the event of a crisis. One last tip: you'll want to purchase a USB drive with a physical write-protect switch, like the one in the image above. Most no longer have it, which is unfortunate, but it is critical that yours does. The reason: if you have to use a public-access computer, say, in a Red Cross tent, there is no chance of a virus corrupting your files, because locking out the switch puts the drive into a READ-ONLY status, making it 100% safe. Hope this helps! Take care... --Jeffrey
